Signalling design for new rolling stock
The Client: London Underground Ltd (LUL)
The Project: S8 Enabling Works – OS1
Completed: Due to be completed January 2011
The Brief
LUL’s sub-surface railway is undergoing a major upgrade and new or upgraded
assets are needed to accommodate the first eight-car (S8) passenger trains in service and keep the entire network safely on the move in the process. On the strength of SIMS’ previous work for the company, as well as our Link-Up accreditations and proven capability to fulfil all requirements for ‘Cat S’ approval of LU signalling designs, LUL commissioned SIMS to provide signalling design and installation solutions.
The Solution
SIMS worked closely with LUL to satisfy the scope of work within the allotted time frame and budget. More than 20 signals, signs and indicators were moved at the northern end of the Metropolitan Line in preparation for the introduction of the new S8 rolling stock. This involved:
- Carrying out requisite site surveys

- Providing compliant proposals to achieve the required sighting for the deficient signals
- Presenting these proposals to the London Underground Signal Sighting Committee
- Pre-design correlation
- Supplying a Cat S-approved signalling design for the new system
- Providing all management and liaising with civil-design sub-contractors and other third parties
- Providing installation, testing and commissioning support for all works associated with the project
- Updating master drawings and CAD files
- Project close-out
